The next installment in the venerable Brothers in Arms series will have to wait a little longer, it seems. The previously announced Furious 4 will be “reimagined,” says Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, into a brand new IP. The announcement was made earlier this week at the annual PAX Prime event in Seattle. The desire to turn its back on the Brothers in Arms legacy came out of the game’s evolved design philosophy. Furious 4 followed the antics of four eccentric military soldiers during World War II, a scenario not unlike Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds. This was a radical departure from the series’ typically melancholic and serious subject matter.

Pitchford announced that more information about the brand new title will be revealed on September 15 at the upcoming Gearbox community day in Dallas. The game was originally scheduled for a 2012 release but was pushed back into the 2013 window earlier this year.

Announced in 2011 at E3, the would-be follow up to Gearbox’s well-received Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway struck a nerve with many franchise fans for its much more comedic tone and its disassociation from the previous games. A rebranding is the right idea for Gearbox, allowing them to keep the Brothers in Arms fans happy and potentially bring in a whole new crowd.
