Xbox 720 Reportedly Set for Fall 2013 Launch

by Josh Galligan on January 27, 2012

Yes, that’s right — IGN is reporting via “sources close to the project” that Microsoft is planning to release the much-anticipated Xbox 720 in either “late October or early November” of 2013.

If I was a betting man — and I am — I’d go with the early November option being the most likely, what with Microsoft seemingly having a thing for releasing their consoles in that month for some reason.

Other interesting tidbits from the IGN story include the fact that, contrary to popular belief, the Xbox 720′s GPU will not be based on AMD’s 7000 series Southern Islands GPU and instead from the 6000 series introduced just last year. Apparently, it will essentially be comparable to the Radeon HD 6670, which is just as powerful as it sounds. In layman’s terms, the 720 is expected to have six times the raw graphic processing power of the 360.

I’ll give you a moment to wrap your head around that one.

It definitely sucks that we’ll have to wait nearly two years for the arrival of the Xbox 720 — and presumably the Playstation 4 as well — but at least we’ve got a rough guesstimation as to when we can expect it and that’s always good.
