Rumor Mill – Star Wars: First Assault

SW

Speculations abound with the possible reveal of a new Star Wars game in development, supposedly called Star Wars: First Assault. The news was broken by Fusible, which cited the new domain name StarWarsFirstAssault.com, hinting at a new entry into the Star Wars library.

Over the past year LucasArts has been undergoing another company shakeup with numerous layoffs across the studio and its parent companies, including BioWare. The Mass Effect developer’s own MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has seen a drastic decline in its player subscriptions since its 2011 launch; as a result the game will be going free-to-play this fall. This also comes on the heel of the disappointing 2010 release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.

However, all is not dim in the Star Wars universe. At this year’s E3, fans were treated to a sneak peek at the spectacular new series in the Star Wars franchise, 1313. With a new play style and a visual approach that moves away from the tried-and-true generic Jedi-basics, 1313 looks as if it might put the Force back into the weakening game lineup.

There isn’t, however, any indication or concept art that might shed some light on what First Assault might be. Early rumors, from the title alone, could indicate that the game could be a continuation of the popular Rebel Assault, which was released back in 1995.

For this writer, there are high hopes that this new Star Wars title might be the long awaited sequel to one of the best games in the Star Wars universe, Battlefront III or Battlefront Online.

What do you think, or hope, the new Star Wars: First Assault might be?
