Go Ahead and Add OWNT to the SOPA Blackout List Set for Tomorrow

by Josh Galligan on January 17, 2012

Unsurprisingly — and not that anyone truly cares — but we’ve ultimately decided that in lieu of trying to boggart all of the video game traffic that will be wandering aimlessly around the Interwebs tomorrow, we’re actually going to go ahead and add our website to the growing number of sites set to blackout in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill. Namely because we feel very strongly about the cause and in protecting the Internet from the government censoring in that it is set to become a reality should the bill end up passing.

If you’re one of the five people who are still in the dark (no pun intended) about the SOPA bill, then allow us to enlighten you a bit.

Supposedly introduced to help combat the online piracy (see: torrent) sub-world of the Internet, the bill is curiously focused on granting the government — under a handpicked committee (think along the same lines of the Department of Homeland Defense) — complete and utter control over the Internet and its contents. Like, everywhere. And with almost no official oversight whatsoever.

Sort of like what you’d expect from a communist and/or fascist regime, yes? Essentially, it’s existing under the umbrella of stopping the online piracy/torrent sites while also — and very much under the radar — enabling the government and giving it the official “right” to choose what can and cannot exist on the web. Can you say “potential for a God complex” anyone?

It’s wrong. It’s pathetic. And it’s actually pretty refreshing to see so many places and people banding together under the blackout cause tomorrow to help combat and raise awareness in regards to the bill.

There are certainly other ways to go about combating online piracy/torrent sites and those who upload them without throwing an all-encompassing fascist net over the entire Internet. For serious and for true. But that’s a topic for another day, folks.

For a much, much more in-depth and helpful encapsulation of the SOPA bill, please feel free to head on over to the consummate Gizmodo for more information. And we’ll see you first thing on Thursday!
