Sony today surprised nobody by proving recent rumors true, regarding a new even slimmer model of the Playstation 3.

Primarily the new console manages to limit the space taken up by previous models of PS3, although the new model also has an interesting disc-tray cover that slides down the face of the console, showing off the slot in which the disc will spin. Unlike the PS3′s primary market rival, the original and follow up models included a slot which pulled the disc in, rather than pushing a tray out for a disc to be placed in. It appears that Sony have decided to keep up with the PS3 style, in their own way, by not forcing any aspect of the new ‘super-slim’ PS3 to project outwardly, whilst still giving players the ability to place their disc into the tray themselves.

The internet recently has been awash with rumors of such a model enhancement. Sony have announced a number of important details from the size reduction, a whole 50% from the original PS3 model; the price, $269.99 which isn’t much more than the upcoming basic model of the Wii U; the release date, September 25th (yeah: Next week!) and, arguably the most important detail, the hard-drive size, a smooth 500 GB’s, more than ten times the size of the upcoming $300 Wii U’s hard-drive.

Considering my launch PS3 only shipped with 60 GB’s and still runs on only 60 GB’s with little trouble, this sort of hard-drive space is probably unnecessary for most gamers but then again I’m a lot more willing to part with downloads, installs and save-games I’ll never use again than some are. Also, whoever said no to more memory for less money?
